What I really wanted were some beautiful Moroccan or geometric tiles, but those were way over my budget so I got the idea to paint cement pavers and create a unique design for only $1 each. Meanwhile, my friend Carly (check out her crafty ways here!) was researching block quilt patterns and she found one that was perfect for my patio. Thank you Carly! I tested a bunch of colors until I got the right fit. I’m so glad I went this route because not only was it affordable but so much more special.
I bought pavers, 20 at a time for the last few weeks and painted them in the evenings after work. I used Cabot & Life Deck paints to ensure it lasts and wears well. When I had most of them done, I hired my awesome gardener Jose to level out the 12x14 foot space. Together we installed weed cloth & a wood frame.
Though I did carry some pavers down, Jose and my pal Fredy DeMata did the brunt of the hard work, carrying sand bags and pavers down all those stairs to the lower yard. BUT, I did make grilled chicken, cucumber salad and quesadillas for lunch which was an essential part :) Aside from the painting, we got the whole thing done in a day. Yay team work!!
Now I just need more seating and a firepit! Oh yeah, and some more landscaping. I’m excited to enjoy this space, especially since my sister & family are coming all the way from Israel to stay with me this summer. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a bit and take time to look up at the trees. Hope the photos inspire you and please share with anyone you think may like it!

and PS…. if you’ve gotten this far… I’ve been getting some nice emails about these lil projects and wanted to clarify; my day job is Architectural Color Consultant. I help people choose paint colors for their interior & exterior spaces. I’m also a musician working on a new record. This blog is to share projects I do for fun in my non-working/non-music hours. They’re mostly for my home and office and occasionally I sell some stuff too.
